Ok let's start with the question - can we survive without a financial system? - take a look at the link to the Venus Project on the links page for background on this idea
credit crunch .. my opinion is that it has been caused by GREED ! .. people wanting too much material goods .. banks lending out money too easily .. we have to get back to basics .. if we cannot afford stuff .. then dont buy it .. simple .. we can all share a bit more .. we could set up a list of what we are prepared to give away .. and another list of what we need .. ( ha ! the last list should be quite interesting .. it will show who the greedy ones are ! .. lol .. )
This brings me to a conversation I had with Rik about greed - Is greed human nature or is it something humans develop due to the culture they live in ?
it appears to be a race by the '' more developed'' countries to see who can be the first to get the latest whatever ! .. look at the ''less developed '' and take a lesson from them about sharing and every one works together to survive .. no greed involved there .. just survival and respect and love for one another .
I don't think humans are inherently greedy, I think they see what others have and want it for themselves. There seems to be something in our culture that says success is determined by how much money you earn and what car you drive, which I think is sad.
I heard about the Venus Project from watching the new Zeitgeist film so I had a look at the web site. It made me think straight away of Orwell's Animal Farm, and how a Utopian Society is impossible as corruption and power is needed to create it in the first place. What I mean is that someone would still have control by means of technology and so there is a potential for corruption. I.e. technology would become the 'new money' if you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong, I wish the wealth of the world was shared in a more equal way too! I'm not discounting the idea either, it's just my first reaction. I realise this is a bit of a negative view so I should add that I would love to travel to China on a train under the sea!
I dont think its a negative view Sue, realistic view maybe - I too am a realist and think the only way forward to a more equal share for everyone will happen very slowly and maybe things will have to get worse before they get better ie: people will have to lose a lot first.
I personally believe all we can do in the here and now is make small steps towards a new awareness and way of being and that will begin with educating people with basic skills relating to basis needs that have slowly but surely been eroded over the last 50 years along with a laziness that a consumer society has brought us.
Travelling to China on a train under the sea sounds like great fun, although maybe a bit claustrophobic for me.
The credit crisis isn't over yet, I think in a couple of months, financially we are going to be in a rough state. When I mean "WE", I mean the United States in particular. The reason for why I think this is, because of commercial real estate. What they have done to the home real estate market will happen in commercial real estate and is happening as I write this, with the failing of a major commercial real estate company; CIT. When or if this happens,it will be bad and if they try to bail out companies like they did earlier this year it will make things far worse. Bailing out huge companies with huge amounts of DEBT, is always a very bad idea.
